Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Side-by-Side

These are the most common type of double pushchair, and usually can accommodate two children together. They tend to be a bit wider than single pushchairs, meaning they may be less nimble on footpaths and can be a bit difficult to navigate between the kerbs with a car attached. However the extra width means that they're usually more comfortable to maneuver through doorways and are more evenly distributed making them less burdensome to carry around on your back.

They can be used as a twin pram from birth, and many models can be used with a carrycot or 2 car seats. Some models can be converted to one mode, with a basket beside (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the most excellent examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in Twin Mode, allows you to fit the rear seat and carrycot side-by-side. This creates a fully enclosed space for twins and is perfect for babies. This folding pram also comes with a couple of really cool accessories, such as the newborn cocoons which can be attached to the front or back (for twin-facing prams travel system) or facing inwards (for a normal single). It's not as light like other options but it's incredibly well created.

Cybex is known for its nifty pushchairs and the single-to-double is no exception. Its innovative frame expands widthways to take two seats and can be used it as a twin right from birth by incorporating the addition of two newborn cocoons (PS59 each) which create enclosed lie-flat spaces for infants. The large shopping basket behind the seat allows it to be used in mono mode for a single child. And it comes with rear and front suspension to tackle bumps and uneven surfaces a little more easily. Tandem

If you plan to have twins, you'll need a tandem pushchair. This allows the children to sit together and look at each one another. They are great for trips to the zoo since the kids can observe the animals together. They are also ideal for parents who wish to watch both their toddler and their baby at the same time.

Some tandem pushchairs are very adaptable, since they can be converted back to single mode. This is particularly useful if you plan to have more children than two (or in the event that your child who is the oldest doesn't require a buggy any longer). This means that you won't be left with an empty pushchair to put away and can be expensive.

For example the Cybex Venus can be used in double or mono mode and has a smart frame that opens wide to accommodate a second seat. This isn't the lightest of pushchairs, however it comes with an enormous shopping basket that is placed behind the front seat when in double mode (and at the back of the seat when it's mono mode). A tandem pushchair could also be used to transport two carrycots or a car seat pram with a buggy seat. This allows you to create a travel system from the beginning and save money on additional purchases. It's important to keep in mind, however, that tandems are heavier and longer than single pushchairs and may feel less stable when in bumping into kerbs or over uneven surfaces. They also have to be dismantled for fitting into cars.
