How to Replace an audi car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor programming is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors audi keyless go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues with your car. It's a vital component of the audi smart key replacement's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common component across the new audi key 80 100 200, UrS and Spare Audi Key RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
